This was the home of Dr. Kate Waller Barrett, a pioneering woman in Alexandria’s history who advocated for women’s rights and social reform. A physician, author, suffragist, and social reformer, Barrett was instrumental in advancing rights for marginalized women, especially unwed mothers. She was active in the Florence Crittenton Mission, helping at-risk women and children.
