Bruin Jail

Built in 1819, this red-brick building functioned as a holding facility for enslaved individuals before they were sold south. The site played a significant role in Alexandria’s slave trade history.

Part of the Women's History Collection:

Emily and Mary Edmonson sisters were held here after a failed escape attempt but were later freed and became active in the abolitionist movement.
